Best Places to Buy Art Online – Top Picks

While I strongly recommend buying directly from artists whenever possible directly via their site or instagram here are some other options that I’ve personally used in the past that we strongly recommend:

  • Etsy: has everything and the good thing is (while there are of course fees for the artist) you are directly supporting small artists with a portion of your purchase
  • inprnt – this site offers royalties of up to 50% directly to artists so it’s one of the best places to buy art while supporting artists directly
  • Society6 – as of this writing Society6 only gives 10% to their artists ( of course try to buy directly from the artist whenever possible), but it has some of the largest variety of prints at an affordable price
    • pro tip if you see any artist you like on Society6 you can always google them and buy directly*
  • Saatchi Art – while some of these pieces are higher end, they have some truly standout, original* pieces of art that can fit virtually any theme or style

For me personally, depending on my budget, I aim to buy directly from artists (if I can afford it*) then will go to sites like Etsy then finally onto larger art sellers (like Society6).

    Best Art Websites Full List

    Society6 – Best for Variety*

Good for: Finding a variety of different types of art on a budget

    So Extra Art Print
    by Side Dimes

Society6 is an amazing place to buy art online for any budget. The only issue is that their royalties paid to artists is on the lower end.

If you want to support artists directly with a higher paying site, you can consider Etsy or INPRNT.

Regardless, I’m a big fan of Society6 due simply to their variety and standout art prints.

With pieces ranging from $20 to more expensive options, you can create a gallery wall with a variety of styles and looks. Whether you’re looking for something whimsical or abstract, nature scenes or cheeky sayings, Society6 has it all. The artwork is all high-quality and the shopping experience is easy and fun. You can find prints, framed prints, canvas prints, tapestries, and even phone cases with art designs on them.

Plus, they offer free shipping over $45 so you can get your art delivered right to your door without any hassle.

Saatchi Art – Best for Higher End Collections

Good for: Those willing to splurge to upgrade their art and receive art purchasing advice

    Twilight Print
    Nelly van Nieuwenhuijzen

Saatchi Art is another great optionfor more renonwed contemporary artists.

If there is one downside its that they don’t often feature emerging artists and are usually more likely to feature artists who are already quite popular.

Here you’ll find an impressive collection of art at accessible prices, with original pieces starting at around $110 and limited-edition prints at $75. Whether your tastes lean towards photography, collages, canvas prints, oil paintings or sculptures, Saatchi Art has it all.

Plus, the site offers a complimentary art advisory service where a team of curators can help you build a unique collection that fits your space and taste.

INPRNT – Best for Supporting Artists

Good for: Supporting artists through a site that pays 50% royalties to artists

Big moon landscape with a house by Lorini Art

Unlike other sites like Society6 and Amazon, INPRNT has some of the highest royalties paid to their artists of any art site. So I strongly recommend checking them out.

The only con I’d mention is that their site navigation and the actual purchasing of art isn’t the smoothest (that plus slow shipping times may lead many to look at other options like Society6 or artfinder)

Their site is popular for giclée art prints that are very affordable and makes it easy to search for artists and their work.

Artfinder – Best for International Art with Artists in Mind

What to Look for When Buying Wall Art Online

When looking to buy wall art online, there are several things to consider.

    • First, think about the style you want – abstract, impressionism, modern, art deco, bohemian (boho), midcentury, nautical, landscapes and fine art are all popular genres.
    • Next, consider how the piece will fit with your home décor – it, ideally, should complement the colors and textures already in your space.
    • If you’re unsure of what to choose or have a hard time deciding between different pieces, look for online galleries that offer designer-recommended pieces – this can help narrow down your choices.
    • Finally, make sure you understand the purchasing and return policy before making a purchase – some galleries may not accept returns or exchanges on certain items.

    Material and Type

The most common types of art are usually:

    • Original painting or canvas
    • Giclee print
    • Digital print
    • Woodwork
    • Sculpture

For a timeless look, opt for an original painting or canvas print – both materials will last for years and look great with any decor style.

If you’re looking for something more modern, consider digital art prints or metal hangings – these materials are perfect for contemporary spaces. Woodwork is another great option if you’re looking to add texture to your walls.

    Size

Always be sure to check the size of the print or art you are buying online.

We all know that things often seem larger when purchasing items online. Plus you might get excited when you see an affordable piece of art but may quickly get disappointed when you find out it’s only a 4×5 print.

So be sure to check the size carefully!
